About Kaufman Prairie Preserve

Kaufman Prairie Preserve is located in Story County, Iowa, and is managed by The Nature Conservancy. Spanning approximately 400 acres, this preserve protects a high-quality example of native tallgrass prairie, one of North America's most endangered ecosystems. The gently rolling terrain is dominated by big bluestem, little bluestem, Indian grass, and numerous prairie wildflowers, providing critical habitat for grassland birds, pollinators, and other prairie-dependent wildlife. Historically, the tallgrass prairie once covered vast portions of the Midwest but has largely been lost to agriculture and development. Kaufman Prairie serves both as a conservation site and an outdoor classroom focused on prairie restoration and ecology. Visitors can explore several marked trails that traverse through diverse prairie habitats, spotting species such as bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks, and monarch butterflies during migration seasons. The preserve is also a site for controlled burns which maintain prairie health and biodiversity. Though it lacks formal campgrounds, day hiking and birdwatching are the main recreational activities. Educational signage along the trails provides insight into prairie plants, wildlife, and restoration efforts. Kaufman Prairie is appreciated for its quiet solitude and rich natural history, drawing nature enthusiasts and researchers alike. Access is by appointment or during scheduled open days coordinated by The Nature Conservancy.
